Psychodynamic Psychotherapy helps my clients understand the origins of their problems, which are often buried in their unconscious, and it helps them overcome anxiety, depression, or addictions. As part of the process, we explore past life experiences, aiding them to recognize persistent patterns of behaviour.

During sessions, I support my clients as they delve into their unconscious, enabling them to identify how deep-seated feelings are having a negative influence on their lives.

In this process, clients will hopefully learn how distress has been avoided and how defence mechanisms have been developed as a way of coping. Several research studies have been published attesting to psychodynamic psychotherapy's lasting beneficial change.

I provide therapeutic services on both a short and long-term basis.

FAQs

Individual Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on understanding and exploring the deep-seated, often unconscious feelings and motivations that influence our behaviour and relationships. It aims to uncover the root causes of emotional difficulties rather than just addressing symptoms.

How Does Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Work?

In psychodynamic therapy, you'll engage in open-ended conversations with your therapist. Together, you'll explore your thoughts, feelings, early-life experiences, and dreams. This process helps you gain insights into patterns in your life and develop healthier ways of coping.

What Issues Can Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Help With?

This form of therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Trauma and abuse

  • Grief and loss

  • Identity and self-esteem issues

  • Emotional regulation problems

How Long Does Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Take?

The duration of therapy varies for each individual. Some people may benefit from short-term therapy over a few months, while others might engage in longer-term therapy lasting a year or more. The pace and length depend on your specific needs and goals.

What Should I Expect in a Session?

In a typical session, you’ll have the opportunity to speak freely about whatever is on your mind. Your therapist will listen attentively, ask questions, and help you explore your feelings and experiences in depth. Sessions are usually held weekly, at least initially, and last around 50 minutes.

Is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Right for Me?

If you’re looking to understand yourself more deeply and are open to exploring past experiences and unconscious processes, psychodynamic therapy might be a good fit for you. It’s particularly useful for those who want to address the underlying causes of their issues rather than just alleviating symptoms.

How Do I Start Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

To begin, you can contact me to schedule an initial consultation. During this first meeting, we’ll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your goals, and how we can work together. This session also provides an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have about the process.

How Confidential Is My Therapy?

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the therapeutic process. Everything you share in therapy is kept private, with a few legal exceptions, such as if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others. We’ll discuss confidentiality in more detail during your first session.

What Are the Benefits of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?

The benefits include:

  • Greater self-awareness

  • Improved emotional regulation

  • Enhanced relationships

  • Deeper understanding of personal patterns and behaviours
